Sesame PlaceA couple of weeks ago we took Andrew to Sesame Place for the first time. Sesame place is a theme  park in Pennsylvania based on, you guessed it,  Sesame Street. The park’s target audience is young kids and there was a nice selection of dry attractions, water attractions, and shows for that age group. Tickets for the park are about the average for theme parks at $48 a ticket (2-day pass). It also costs about $13 for parking. The food averages $7 to $10 for meals and about $4 for snacks. You are allowed to take a small cooler in to the park, so we packed some bottles of water. There isn’t much to do for really young kids like Andrew’s age, but we wanted to make a trip to the park to see what it’s about and see if we wanted to go back next year.

ElmoThe day we went the temperature was around 90 degrees, so we weren’t sure if we would last long.  The park was not very crowded, but more people arrived throughout the day. I took a map and we proceeded to explore the entire park. The park is not large and it took only 20 minutes to explore everything. The only attraction we did with Andrew was “Big Bird’s Birdbath” and the carousel. He LOVED the birdbath. He sat in the shallow water the whole time splashing, but he wasn’t too fond of the fountains. The force of the water drops was probably a little too hard for him. The carousel was your typical carousel, except for the Sesame Street customizations. Unfortunately, he couldn’t sit on a horse because he had to be wearing shoes, so we settled for the bench.

bert1 As the day wore on he started to get tired and cranky. We didn’t have time to attend any shows, but next time we go we would like to attend one. The most exciting part of our day (and his) was meeting the characters! We happened to stumble upon Big Bird and Elmo just as they were coming back from a break, we walked right up to them and took pictures. He was thrilled to meet Big Bird and he had the biggest open mouth smile! Same goes for Elmo, but this time he actually cried as we left and was frantically looking for him. On the way out we ran in to Bert & Ernie and he practically was jumping out of our arms to get to them. Meeting the characters was definitely the highlight of the day. Note –There is no set schedule for most of the characters, so you have to stumble upon them as you walk around the park.

All in all we were impressed by the selection of activities in the park for young kids and will probably go back in August when he is a little older. We will most likely get season passes for next year, so we will have another activity to enjoy with Andrew.

Here is a list of attractions for toddlers around Andrew’s age (12 months and under):

  • Ernie’s Waterworks. Water activity featuring water sprays.
  • Teeny Tiny Tidal Wave Pool. A shallow wading pool with gentle waves for toddlers.
  • Rubber Duckie Pond. Another shallow wading pool.
  • Silly Sand Slides. Playground slides in a beach setting.
  • Big Bird’s Birdbath. Andrew’s favorite, a pool with spraying fountains.
  • All four shows are appropriate for all ages.
