Here is a list of 11 items that I consider *must haves* in our diaper bag!
- Favorite Toys. Having a couple of his favorite toys with us at all times really helps keep him busy during long days. We always pick small and easily attachable toys to put in the bag.
- Bottle of Travel Size Formula. A few months ago we found these new Similac Ready to Feed travel size bottles of formula and picked some up. I must say having the travel bottle as a backup really came in handy when the bottle we brought was not enough. They are ready to feed, so all you have to do is attach a nipple and you are ready to go!
- Bag of Snacks. These must ALWAYS be in the bag when we go out! Snacks work wonders when he is cranky or needs to be occupied. He loves feeding himself, and that often keeps him content for a long time. Some snacks include Puffs, Yogurt Melts, and Cheerios.
- Extra Outfit. It is always nice to have an extra outfit when we are out just in case the one he is wearing gets wet or dirty.
- Travel Container of Wipes. Wipes are essential for changing diapers or cleaning him up. You can either buy a prepackaged pack of wipes, or just buy an empty plastic container and put some in there.
- One or Two Diapers. Always make sure you have diapers, for obvious reasons! When taking your baby in the water, make sure you have swim diapers as well.
- Disposable Changing Pads. I don’t know about you, but the thought of all the germs on public changing tables is enough to make me cringe! Disposable changing pads are small, thin paper sheets you put down on the table. They can be disposed of when finished.
- Disposable Place Mats. These place mats some in handy when we go to restaurants. We purchased Sesame Street mats to give Andrew something fun to look at.
- Baby Sunscreen. Make sure you always have this on hand when going out in the sun. Any time your baby will be exposed to the sun for a long period of time, you must apply sunscreen.
- Johnson & Johnson First Aid Kit. J&J and Safety 1st make these excellent travel sized first aid kits that contain basic essentials in case of emergency. Carrying around one of these kits gives us peace of mind.
- Disposable Bibs. Sometimes you forget his bib or the one you brought is soiled beyond belief, this is where disposable bibs come in handy. They are paper thin, so they take up less room in the bag and can be disposed of when finished.

[...] I had the bag, I immediately wondered what should go inside it. There are plenty of lists out there detailing what you need to carry around with you. They will make your wife’s usual haul look like [...]
A helpful list for those with babies under 12-18 months. It would also be nice to see a list of stuff one shouldn’t be without when out & about with the over 18-24 month crowd.
I would suggest however that parents be a little less “lazy” with all the disposable stuff. Yes, it’s convenient. But it’s also filling up our landfills & choking our water systems faster than we can possibly acomodate. If you want a semi-pristine planet to leave for that precious baby you’re hauling a diaper bag for, getting a bigger diaper bag & preparing better with items that are washable, reusable, or at the very least recylable would be the more responsible thing to do.
Just a thought.
Cheers!
I agree, Cheryl! We sometimes forget what happens to the disposable items once they are discarded.
