Teaching basic manners will also help, as will teaching children how to show respect for others. Isis Baby

I understand the idea of an allowance being an opportunity to teach your child about how to value money, how to budget, etc.

But just what are they getting the allowance for?

Is it money they just get every week for nothing? How does this teach them the basic idea of ‘earning money’?

Do they get it for completing their weekly chores? Well, shouldn’t they be doing their bit as a member of the household anyway? And what happens if they haven’t done their chores?

Or do they only get an allowance for doing chores above and beyond their normal duties? This means they are ‘earning it’, negotiating a fee and thinking about the value of money - yes, as you can tell, that’s ticked all the right boxes for me.
